Mobile phone users are being encouraged to find out if operators are doing enough to keep their calls secret
Open source group released software that cracks the A5/1 encryption algorithm
PrivateGSM is an anti-wiretapping software that allows to make both secure (encrypted) and standard (unencrypted) calls from your own mobile phone. For safe calls, software must be installed on both mobile phones: the caller’s and the recipient’s one. However, you only need to purchase a single license, and then send an invitation via sms to the persons you want to be able to safely speak with, in order to let them install PrivateGSM in Receive-Only mode (see below).
The operating principle is very sophisticated: when sending a secure call from a mobile phone via PrivateGSM, the client negotiates with the other party an AES256 session key, encrypted with the Diffie Hellman’s elliptic curve method. The item is then digitalized, encrypted at 256 bits and transmitted between the two phones via the GSM channel DATA. The unique session key allowing voice decryption is then immediately destroyed after the call. Note that the audio quality of the conversation is identical to that of a normal call.
IMPORTANT:
PrivateGSM requires the activation of the CSD data line. CSD data line activation must be requested to his own mobile telephony operator, and it’s usually done without any additional cost. Before using PrivateGSM, please check availability of CSD data line on your SIM card with your mobile telephony provider.
From the PrivateGSM menu:
Access the PrivateGSM menu by typing 801 and pressing OK. Select “secure calls”. You'll see your personal address book, and will then be able to choose the number to safely call.
By using the safety code:
Enter +801 before the number to call. PrivateGSM will acknowledge the secure call request and immediately self-activate.
The invitation system is the great innovation of PrivateGSM. It allows you to share the anti-wiretapping software with all your contacts so that they can install (in the Receive-Only mode) and receive safe calls without buying anything. Protection will still be bi-directional: both of you, caller and recipient, will be protected within the call. The Receive-Only mode allows you to receive secure calls from any other PrivateGSM user without any limits.
Warning: in Receive-Only mode you can receive unlimited safe calls, but you can’t carry out any.
Firewall, VPN, data encryption, encoded backup...While protecting corporate network with such means, organizations often neglect voice channel, leaving the whole communication vulnerable for intrusion. Now, there is a solution: Enterprise VoIP Security Suite.
